Steuart Welch
Steuart Welch is an artist working primarily with Corten Steel. He uses twisting, bending, cutting, and welding to bring his unique artistic vision to life. His freestyle engineering approach adds a distinctly abstract quality to each piece, whether a small indoor work or a large outdoor structure. These sculptures reflect the versatility and creativity that steel, as a medium, offers.
Steuart finds inspiration in the intersection of seemingly contrasting worlds—dairy farming, rugby, and art. This diverse background shapes his work, infusing it with depth and making each creation a true reflection of his life experiences.
His artistic journey began 12 years ago when he started experimenting with steel. What began as an exploration soon evolved into a profound passion. As a self-taught artist, Steuart developed unique engineering techniques, adapting them to suit his artistic objectives. Every piece of steel is meticulously cut and shaped by hand, embodying the dedication and craftsmanship behind each of his creations.
Steuart’s artistic process could be seen as a form of performance art. Each sculpture takes approximately three weeks to complete, followed by two months of rusting outdoors. This intentional weathering gives the sculptures a natural, organic patina, enhancing their visual impact and helping them harmonize with their surroundings.
